Toyotomi Hideyoshi died of natural causes in September 1598, but before that he formed a council of five regents, his five trusted generals, who he made responsible for governing the country until his heir Hideyori (AD 1593-1615), just five years old at the time, reached adulthood. But despite his planning, it did not take long for divisions to appear in this council and for war to break out among his generals, a conflict from which the last of the three great unifiers of Japan would emerge victorious.
